As I had predicted, I couldn’t fall asleep once I got into bed. Ideas and questions kept racing through my mind. If Steven was the killer, what was his motive—money, sexual jealousy, or both? If Lily knew Steven had killed Ryan, would she really have given him an alibi for murdering her lover? I got out of bed and added it to my things to think about list.

I crawled back in, but still couldn’t fall asleep, because then I started thinking about Gina and Warren and their motives. And then there was James, my main concern, with his super-flimsy story about a guardian angel who had not only watched over him, but had driven him home and put him to bed.

Finally, I got up for good. I sat down at my laptop on the theory that if I stopped thinking so hard about the murder, some answers would come. I focused instead on making real progress on my book. By the time the dark was beginning to give way to the dawn, I had written some solid chapters. Unfortunately, as I stood up and stretched, I did not also receive a flash of insight that brought sudden clarity to my confused ideas about Ryan’s death.

I flopped down on my bed again, but this time it offered me blessed relief, not tortured thinking. When I woke up a few hours later, I felt reasonably rested. A shower and some coffee revved me up for the day, and I pulled out my list and put things in order.
